University Libraries Email Servers Upgraded, Moved

Starting at midnight and into the morning of Saturday, October 27th, 2007, the University Libraries' Email Servers were upgraded to the latest releases of software and relocated to Digital Library Technologies' Disaster Recovery site on the west side of Atherton Street.

The upgrade was done to insure the best possible service in e-mail, using the latest versions of the PMDF mail service and the PMAS Anti-Spam Gateway, and hosting those packages on the latest version of the Solaris Operating System.

The move to the Disaster Recovery site was done to place the mail servers on new hardware, in order to free up the previous hardware platform, so that it can be upgraded to that latest version of Solaris.

The Resolution Problem The move of the mail server required a change to its IP address. While the official name the server system, psulias.psu.edu, did not change, users may find that their local systems cannot resolve that name to the new IP address.
  • Users may observe this problem manifest by errors suggesting that the server @psulias.psu.edu sent an illegally formed response, or simply find their computer cannot connect to the server.

  • The reason for these errors is that the user's computer has cached the address resolution for psulias.psu.edu, in order to save time on subsequent lookups.

  • Correcting this requires the local computer to discard the cached memory of the now-defunct IP address, and force it to look up the new resolution.

Solution #1: Rebooting the local computer will cause the cached memory of the old address to be discarded, and force the lookup of the new resolution.

Solution #2: For those who wish to force the lookup of the new resolution without such drastic measures as rebooting, Windows users can run the ifpconfig utility:

  • Exit any web browsers or e-mail clients you may have running.

  • Click START, choose Run... type "cmd" in the Run dialog box that is presented and click .

  • In the command window that opens, type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit return.

Freshly launched browsers and e-mail clients should pick up the newly resolved address.
